          Learn to Sail

The Setauket Yacht Club Inc. has been teaching sailing to young people and adults for over 30 years on Port Jefferson Harbor and Long Island's North Shore.

sail The success of our programs is best measured by the accomplishments of our graduates. It has been a joy to watch young sailors advance from basic sailing to advance racing.

Participants in our programs, as adults, have gone on to crew in the America's Cup competition and many are associated with the sailing industry, while others are leaving their mark in Club Racing all over Long Island Sound.

Our instructors are products of the sailing program or have been on local high school or college teams.

Our classes are tailored to meet the needs of the students appropriately by experience.

Please consider the Setauket Yacht Club as your first step to a lifetime of sailing. We plan to make it a summer of fun for all.

We are offering the Junior Sailing in two week sessions to accommodate your summer schedule. It is suggested that you enroll your child in two consecutive sessions so that she/he may develop a good working knowledge of the principles of sailing.

Join us for a Summer of Fun on the Water

pram Our Pram course is designed for children 8-11. Optimist Prams are 8 feet long and are safe and forgiving of the mistakes made by beginners. There is one child per boat and all of our students are followed by a "chase" boat

bluJ For children 12-17, lessons are in Pixels. These boats are 14 feet long and there will be two students in each boat. The Pixel is a fast, stable, self bailing boat that is a great intermediate boaat to introduce sailors to double handling and spinnaker handling in preparation for the popular Club 420 used by high schools and colleges around the country.

sail sail Adult classes will be offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 6-9 pm and will run for 10 weeks. They will sail in a 19 foot O'Day Mariner or Catalina 22 with four people and the instructor in the boat. For those interested in racing we can probably fix you up to crew on a bigger boat. Club racing is every Tuesday evening.
